Last week was celebrated here, in our Akademgorodok, as its 50th birthday. Half a century ago the government approved the decision to found a scientific center at a carefully selected place in Siberian forests. The place was called Golden Valley due to the beauty of the surrounding scenery. Built on the bank of the Ob River, near the newly built hydropower plant, Akademgorodok quickly obtained its highly respected status. Some famous Russian mathematicians and physicists dared to leave their customary environment, move to Siberia and found scientific schools, which became known worldwide.
Nowadays Akademgorodok has managed to preserve its scientific heart and wide soul.
The anniversary was welcomed with newly decorated houses, resurfaced roads and numerous scientific conferences and seminars. Residents could join a colorful parade and enjoy themselves visiting a concert and watching great fireworks at night. Unfortunately, the day was a bit rainy, but the spirit of the holiday was in the air.
After 50 years of intensive development Akademgorodok got a new impulse with the projects of so called Technopark “Novosibirsk”, an area which is to house a number of IT companies, scientific and development centers and different innovative projects. Our “Silicon Taiga” has still a great potential for further development.
