Ok, so I’ve upgraded to 2.0. In fact, the first time I did it was even before the official release when the first setup files just appeared at ftp archives such as this official mirror of Firefox developers community.
Was it subjective or not, but I decided that this release is kind of rough and I uninstalled it. On the next day, the entire Internet got mad and I decided that sooner or later but I have to do it and I downloaded it again, this time from the official site.
And now I had to deal with all those incompatibility issues. Things were not that bad, actually, and for that 1 day some plugins were updated, like the del.icio.us extension.
Other extensions, such as ImgLikeOpera that allows turning off images for certain sites, are still not compatible. LinkedIn Companion, Download Embedded also have no updates for 2.0 version.
Of course, it’s very nice that now Firefox supports better tabbed browsing, but I still miss much of functionality of Tab Mix Plus. To survive, I had to apply some modifications to the config file, thanks to Lifehacker. For example, I disabled scrolling of the tabs panel because I’m used to work with dozens of (all useful!) tabs open.
Another disappointment was that update for my favourite iFox Smooth theme was not officially available at the Firefox extensions site, so I had to download it at its homepage and install it manually by drag and drop of the theme file to the themes manager in Firefox.
Kudos to Firefox, I love the new spellchecker. Actually, I am not fond of any spellchecker because they are very disturbing at times, but this one was a good surprise. Most of all, I am surprised that I do not make many mistakes typing in all those forms
In a nutshell – yes, go ahead and upgrade to 2.0. Even if some of your extensions become unavailable, there’s always a work around – at their home pages, or using other extensions, or using default Firefix options. Just dig for it.
And… please, don’t follow the 2.0 madness. Whatever 2.0 it is.
Help me please…
I just installed Firefox 2.0, and all of a sudden, my username/password isn't being inserted in the signon window (it always was before). I tried the usual suspects–I did not mistakenly tell FF not to remember the password for this site; and I also tried the remember password bookmarklet, but all to no avail–FF will not ask me to remember this password. What do I need to do to get around this?
