The IT market has no borders. That’s a trite expression and, actually, a truism. Everyone is looking to outsource and everyone believes in outsourcing to countries with cheap labor such as India, China, and Russia after all. Usually you know only what country your developers are from. Apparently, that’s enough to decide whether to work with Indian, Chinese, or Moldavian programmers. The decision is based on price and some silly stereotypes about the nation.
Not everyone takes into account where in the country their developers are based. The society is very heterogeneous and lifestyles differ drastically from a capital to the provinces. It’s a rule of the thumb that prices in capitals are higher than in other cities and towns. It applies to the prices for software development as well. Of course, it is extremely hard to find the metropolitan quality in a provincial hole. The levels of living are lower, so are the professional levels of programmers. You just can’t get the same education in a faraway college. So what to do when you’re confused and attacked by sales people from all those look-alike IT gangs? Do some little research about the city your developers are from. If it is a capital like Moscow, New Delhi, or Minsk, be sure that the prices will be the highest possible. But the quality should be high as well. Look for regions. Look for universities in that city. Check what majors those universities are famous for. Look for scientific centers if there are any nearby. Look and research where you want to invest your money. This is the only smart decision to avoid stereotypes. |
